The tri-mode phone can be thought of as “two phones in one” because it operates in two
distinct ways to make and receive two types of calls:
• Globalstar satellite calls
• Digital or analog cellular calls
Using Globalstar satellite mode requires that the Security Module card be properly installed
in the front lower left side of phone. It contains the Globalstar authentication key (A-key)
that is used in the authentication process, as well as a unique ID number and the user’s
service plan options. Installation allows the tri-mode phone to receive a call or to make
non-emergency Globalstar calls. The security module card installed in the phone is not
interchangeable; it only works with that phone.
The Service Provider installs and maintains the security module cards from its home
service area. Note that the security module only prevents unauthorized Globalstar calls.
Cellular calls can be made without the security module card.
The Globalstar A-key authentication process occurs when the tri-mode phone is turned on
in the Globalstar mode. A signal with information that includes the A-key and the unique
ID number is sent from the phone to a Gateway. An authentication process is performed
using the corresponding data in the Service Provider’s authentication database. When the
results are matched the phone may be used.
